PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a self-diagnostic result automatically communicatable and data on the use state, use environment, etc., of a user transmittable by performing switching between image reading operation and a special mode other than the image forming operation by a communication means. SOLUTION: A multifunction printer 101 receives a cipher code sent from a service center 112 and decodes the cipher code and a judging part 107 judges whether or not the decoded code is proper. When it is judged that the code is proper, it is checked whether or not the multifunction printer 101 having settings permitting a service mode. When the service mode is allowed to be switched, the operation state of the multifunction printer 101 is checked, it is confirmed that the printer is not in a high-priority state such as a print state, and information showing the use state of the user needed for information and service when a self-diagnosis is taken is sent out.
