PLASMA DISPLAY PANEL AND DRIVING THEREOF

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the generation of breakdown of a white dielectric layer on a data electrode of a part out of a display area, in which a surface discharging electrode is not provided, and to prevent the generation of accidental discharge in a plasma display panel. SOLUTION: In an AC type plasma display panel, an auxiliary electrode 10 is formed in an area outside of a display area on a first insulating board 1 formed with at least a scanning electrode 2a and a maintaining electrode 2b and in an area opposite to a data electrode 6 formed on a second insulating board 5. The scanning electrode 2a is made to scan in order so as to generate the writing discharge corresponding to a desirable display between the data electrode 6 and the scanning electrode 2a, and the alternating current maintaining pulse is applied between the scanning electrode 2a and the maintaining electrode 2b so as to maintain the discharge for display, and the auxiliary discharge pule having a polarity opposite to the maintaining pulse is applied to the auxiliary electrode 10. Opposite discharge is periodically generated between the auxiliary electrode 10 and the data electrode so as to eliminate the charge accumulated on a white dielectric layer 7 on the data electrode 6, and the absolute value of the charge accumulated in a part out of the display area is restricted low so as to prevent the generation of breakdown of the white dielectric layer 7 and the generation of accidental discharge.
