Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject carbon black showing viscoelastic properties comparable with those of silica, improving poor dispersibility and processability of silica to those comparable with carbon black's and useful as an additive for rubber by surface treatment of carbon black with a specific compound to fuse silica with the carbon black surfaces. SOLUTION: This carbon black, coated with 10 wt.% or less of silica and having the OH group at 0.6/nm or more, is obtained by surface treatment with a silicon-containing compound, with organic groups totally bound to silicon via oxygen, to fuse it with the carbon black surfaces. It is recommended that the silicon-containing compound is an oligomer shown by the formula [(n) is 1 or 2; (m) is 0 or more; and R is a 1-4C alkyl], e.g. tetramethoxysilane condensate of low molecular weight.
