Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for purifying polluted water which reduces SS components in water to be treated and improves the quality of treated water without installing apparatuses such as a sedimentation basin and a filter in the following process after a purification tank. SOLUTION: In a purification apparatus in which a purification tank is divided into an upstream stage part and a downstream stage part, contact materials 7 of at least 90% porosity are suspended in both parts, and air diffusers 8, 9 are installed below both contact materials. The contact materials are preferably arranged at distance of 100mm or less in the downstream stage part, and in the upstream stage part, the distance is made greater than that in the downstream staged part. The contact materials 7 are preferably made to be string-shaped, porous, or cloth-shaped. In the purification apparatus, dirty water is aerated and purified by the air diffuser 8 in the upstream stage.
