Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To estimate a vertical position (a height of a medium stack) of a medium sheet in a paper feeding tray by detecting initial operation of a sheet picker in sheet pick and time and/or a distance until a picking sheet reaches a sensor. SOLUTION: A sensor 16 of a printer 10 is arranged in a specific place of a paper sheet passage 20. The sensor 16 detects the front edge of a medium sheet 24 passing through the paper sheet passage 20, and sends an output signal to a processor 18. The processor 18 calculates moving time and/or a distance of the medium sheet 24 by monitoring a start of rotation of a pick roller 34 and a signal from the sensor 16. Therefore, a substantially vertical position of the uppermost medium sheet 24 of a medium stack 26 in a paper feeding tray 12, that is, a height of the medium stack 26 is estimated.
