Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply and surely detect a failure of a fuel amount adjusting device by judging that the fuel amount adjusting device fails when the signal of a sensor detecting the component of exhaust is deviated from a specified value. SOLUTION: This device is provided with a sensor 177 for detecting the pressure in a rail 135 to which high pressure fuel is supplied by a high pressure pump 145 and for sending a corresponding signal to a control device 170 and a sensor 180 for forming an exhaust signal Z(k) featuring the component of the exhaust in an exhaust pipe 110. The control device 170 determines a difference ZA between a previous value Z(k) and a new value Z(kf1) after a specified waiting time elapses and judges whether the difference ZA is larger than a threshold value SA or not. If the judgment is NO, the previous value Z(k) is replaced by the new value Z(k+1) and, if the judgment is YES, an error is detected. When the error is detected, it is judged that a fuel amount ad justing device has a trouble and the compensation functions of both devices are started.
