SOLUTION: An antimicrobial composition is prepared which comprises (A) a first antimicrobial agent comprising a porous silica gel having, on its surface, an aluminosilicate film containing at least one metal ion selected from among silver, copper and zinc ions, and (B) a second antimicrobial agent comprising, as a main component, crystalline silicon dioxide containing at least one metal ion selected from among silver, copper and zinc ions. This antimicrobial coating composition is obtained by dispersing and incorporating the antimicrobial composition into a coating composition. This resulting antimicrobial coating composition exhibits desirable antimicrobial and bactericidal activity and has an ability to kill bacteria almost completely, and also has excellent protective ability against mold. Further, since the antimicrobial composition has good dispersibility into a coating, a homogeneous antimicrobial coating composition can be produced with ease.
