ANTIMICROBIAL COATING COMPOSITION

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an antimicrobial coating composition which has excellent resistance to weathering and shows an antimicrobial effect sustainable for a long time, by incorporating thereto a antimicrobial composition comprising two specific types of antimicrobial agents both of which contain at least one metal ion selected from among silver, copper and zinc ions. SOLUTION: An antimicrobial composition is prepared which comprises (A) a first antimicrobial agent comprising a porous silica gel having, on its surface, an aluminosilicate film containing at least one metal ion selected from among silver, copper and zinc ions, and (B) a second antimicrobial agent comprising, as a main component, crystalline silicon dioxide containing at least one metal ion selected from among silver, copper and zinc ions. This antimicrobial coating composition is obtained by dispersing and incorporating the antimicrobial composition into a coating composition. This resulting antimicrobial coating composition exhibits desirable antimicrobial and bactericidal activity and has an ability to kill bacteria almost completely, and also has excellent protective ability against mold. Further, since the antimicrobial composition has good dispersibility into a coating, a homogeneous antimicrobial coating composition can be produced with ease.
