description PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound useful also for controlling many characteristics of a liquid crystal composition for various kinds of display systems using a compound or a composition having a specific structure and positive anisotropic value of dielectric constant. SOLUTION: This compound has a structure comprising 1,7- dioxaspiro-[5.5]undecane-3,9-diyl group in the skeleton structure and is preferably represented by formula I [R and Y are each a 1-20C alkyl, H, a halogen, cyano, etc.; X to X are each a single bond, (CH2 )2 , CH=CH, etc.; ring A to ring A are each 1,7-dioxaspiro[5.5]-undecane-3,9-diyl, etc.; (a ) to (a ) are each 0 or 1, with the proviso that (a +a +a +a +a )>=1], e.g. 3-(2-trans-4-n- pentylcyclohexy)ethyl-9-(2,3-difuoro-4-n-proplphenyl)-1,7-dioxaspiro[5 .5]undecanbe. Furthermore, the compound is preferably obtained by using, e.g. a compound of formula II as a starting substance and passing through reaction of thionly chloride with methanol in the presence of sodium carbonate.
