LIQUID CRYSTALLINE COMPOUND HAVING MINUS ANISOTROPIC VALUE OF DIELECTRIC CONSTANT, LIQUID CRYSTAL COMPOSITION CONTAINING THE SAME LIQUID CRYSTALLINE COMPOUND AND LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY ELEMENT USING THE SAME LIQUID CRYSTAL COMPOSITION

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound useful also for controlling many characteristics of a liquid crystal composition for various kinds of display systems using a compound or a composition having a specific structure and positive anisotropic value of dielectric constant. SOLUTION: This compound has a structure comprising 1,7- dioxaspiro-[5.5]undecane-3,9-diyl group in the skeleton structure and is preferably represented by formula I [R and Y are each a 1-20C alkyl, H, a halogen, cyano, etc.; X to X are each a single bond, (CH2 )2 , CH=CH, etc.; ring A to ring A are each 1,7-dioxaspiro[5.5]-undecane-3,9-diyl, etc.; (a ) to (a ) are each 0 or 1, with the proviso that (a +a +a +a +a )>=1], e.g. 3-(2-trans-4-n- pentylcyclohexy)ethyl-9-(2,3-difuoro-4-n-proplphenyl)-1,7-dioxaspiro[5 .5]undecanbe. Furthermore, the compound is preferably obtained by using, e.g. a compound of formula II as a starting substance and passing through reaction of thionly chloride with methanol in the presence of sodium carbonate.
