DATA MANAGING SYSTEM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent much time and labor from being required by automatically performing backup over plural backup data storage media (tapes) while outputting instructions to a user when data can not be settled within one tape in the case of backup. SOLUTION: This system is provided with a backup information storage means 6 for storing respective files required for the work of backup. The tape to be used for backup is determined and the capacity of this tape is described in a tape capacity description file 7. Besides, an initial value '0' is described in a tape number description file 8. Further, all the directory or file names to be defined as the object of backup are described in a backup object data description file 10. When data can not be settled within one tape in case of backup, backup is performed over plural tapes while outputting instructions to the user. Besides, based on these tapes, data can be restored while outputting instructions to the user.
