Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a photomultiplying agent, a singlet oxygen generator, a microbicide, or an herbicide, exhibiting an excellent photomultiplying activity by containing a specific compound as an active ingredient. SOLUTION: This 1-(substituted)-(3-8)-(substituted)-benzo[c d]indole-2(1H) thione expressed by formula I [R is H, a (substituted) 1-10C alkyl, a 2-10C alkenyl, etc.; X, Y are each a halogen, a 1-4C haloalkyl, a 1-4C alkoxy, etc.; (n), (m) are 0-3], e.g. 1-methylbenzo[c d]indole-2(1H)-thione, etc., is contained as an active ingredient. Further to obtain the thione, it is preferable to react 1-(substituted)-(3-8)-(substituted)benzo[c d]indole-2(1H)-one of formula II (R is the same as R; X , Y are each also the same to X, Y) with phosphorus pentasulfide or a Lawesson reagent.
