IMPACT ABSORPTION TYPE STEERING DEVICE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stabilize impact absorption performance and secure a degree of freedom for the layout of equipment installed around a steering column. SOLUTION: An elevating bracket 8 secured to the middle of a steering column 5 constituting a steering column 1 is supported on a support bracket 9 secured to a vehicular body. When a strong forward impact is applied to the outer column 5, the elevating bracket 8 drops from the support bracket 9, permitting forward displacement of the outer column 5. Folding parts 26, 26 provided at the deforming parts 25, 25 of an energy absorbing member 23 secured to the outer column 5 are placed immediately behind curved parts 27, 27 which are formed at the rear edges of support plate parts 10, 10 constituting the support bracket 9. The first half of each deforming part 25, 25 is projected ahead of a curved plate part through a second oblong hole.
