Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain poly(vinyl alcohol) that is free from sodium ion, can efficiently reduce the residue of the catalyst components and is formed as an increased reaction rate by using dialkyl sulfoxide as a solvent and a psecific compound as a catalyst. SOLUTION: A dialkyl sulfoxide, preferably dimethyl sulfoxide is used as a solvent and a tetraalkylammonium hydroxide of the formula: R1 R2 R3 R4 N OH (R1 -R4 are each an alkyl of 10 or less carbon atoms which may contains an aryl group) is used as a catalyst to effect the alcoholysis of poly(vinyl ester). The reaction temperature of the alcoholysis is set, for example, to 30-120 deg.C in the reaction system under the normal pressure.
