Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably obtain carbon fiber through continuous operation from production of pitch for fiber formation to carbon fiber production by treating a carbonaceous raw material with heat to form a pitch containing the meso phase, releasing low-boiling components by extending the pitch in a thin layer under specific conditions followed by fiber forming. SOLUTION: A carbonaceous raw material such as coal tar or pitch is heat- treated to give a pitch of >=70% meso phase content. The pitch is molten and fed onto a rotator at 335-400 deg.C under reduced pressure and extended in a thin layer on the rotator by the centrifugal force to release low-boiling components. Then, without solidification, the pitch is fed to a spinning machine to form the objective carbon fibers.
