Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a soluble linear or branched polyarylene sulfoxide which contains arylene sulfoxide units, has a specified degree of oxidation, and is esp. suitable for molded items such as films, membranes, nonwoven fabrics, fibers, etc., and for coating molded items. SOLUTION: A soluble linear or branched polyarylene sulfoxide contg. arylene sulfoxide units and having a degree of oxidation of 20-80% is provided. It is soluble in a polar org. solvent at from -20 deg.C to 100 deg.C with a solubility of at least 1wt.%. In order to obtain such a polyarylene sulfide, it is necessary to achieve a homogeneous partial oxidation by dispersing a finely divided polyarylene sulfide in a solvent and slowly adding a mild oxidizing agent to the resultant dispersion under vigorous stirring.
