Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper sheets identifying device capable of adjusting a light receiving level even in the case of using a light emitting element having unstable characteristics. SOLUTION: An optical sensor 1 is adjusted by adjusting the gain of a variable gain amplifier 2 arranged on the light receiving side. At first, the gain of the amplifier 2 is adjusted so that the receiving level Vout is not saturated or extremely lowered at the time of identifying paper sheets without considering the light transmittance or light reflection factor of reference paper. Then the gain of the amplifier 2 is set to 1/transmittance times by a light transmission sensor and to 1/reflection factor times by a light reflection sensor so that the light receiving level Vout obtains a required value at the time of considering the light transmittance of the reference paper or its light reflection factor and arranging the reference paper, so that an optimum light receiving level can be set up.
