Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a car body electrical equipment system from being damaged when trouble and operating inferiority of a changeover switch during an operating mode of an electric heating catalyst is generated. SOLUTION: An exhaust gas purifying device for an internal combustion engine comprises a changeover switch 23 switching a generating output of an alternator 21 driven by an engine to an electric heating catalyst equipped in an exhaust system of the engine and to a car body electrical equipment system 26 and an ECU 5 controlling the generated output of the alternator 21 in accordance with a direction switching the changeover switch 23. The ECU 5 detects abnormality of the changeover switch 23 by a voltage sensor 25 or current sensor, that is, detects the changeover switch 23 locked to the car body electrical equipment system 26 and switched to a car body electrical equipment system side due to some factor during a current carrying mode by high voltage, and when abnormality of the changeover switch 23 is detected, the generated output of the alternator 21 is not switched to a high voltage side.
