Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE: To manufacture a carbon electrode which has high mechanical strength and from which carbon particles are prevented from falling off and the service frequencies of which can be improved by filling a graphite base material with a thermosetting resin composition contg. a surfactant and converting the resin composition into glassy carbon. CONSTITUTION: Fine powder such as powdery coke is kneaded with a binder such as pitch and the kneaded material is pulverized and formed, then, the formed body is fired and carbonized and graphitized to obtain a graphite base material. The graphite base material thus obtained is filled with a thermosetting resin composition contg. a surfactant, such as furan resin or phenolic resin composition by subjecting the material to immersion treatment in the thermosetting resin composition, or the like. As the surfactant, an alkyl sulfosuccinate or the like is appropriate and preferably used in an amount enough to provide an about 0.1 to 10wt.% content in the composition based on the weight of the thermosetting resin. Then, the graphite base material is heated to about 120 to 160 deg.C to cure the resin and thereafter, fired and carbonized at about 800 to 1,500 deg.C in a nonoxidizing atmosphere and further, graphitized at about 2,300 to 3,000 deg.C to convert the resin into glassy carbon. Thus, the objective carbon electrode having an about 7 to 20% filling ratio of glassy carbon is manufactured.
