Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To hold the sealing of a shaft to a housing even when a flange-like projection is formed outward with respect to the sealed portion of the shaft. SOLUTION: A seal device 4 is fitted between a housing 3 and shaft 2 of a mechanical coupling 1 of a gear coupling type including the shaft 2 composed of a shank 20 projecting outside the housing 3 and a flange 7 formed at the tip of the shank 20. The seal device 4 comprises a seal ring 5 fixed on the housing 3 and fitted on the outer periphery of the shank 20, and a pressure plate 6 which overall has an annular shape divided at least two locations and having an inside diameter smaller than the outside diameter of the flange 7 as well as larger than the outside diameter of the shank 20 and a circumference larger than the outside diameter of the shank 20 and which is fixed on the housing 3 as well as axially presses the seal ring 5 against the housing 3.
