COATING MATERIAL FOR COATING PAPER AND MANUFACTURE OF COATED PAPER

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a coating material for coating paper that is good in cushioning properties of a coating layer and excellent in glossiness by incorporating a specified water-soluble polymer binder derived from a polyoxyethylene compound and specified temperature-sensitive gelable resin latex. SOLUTION: This coating material for coating paper comprises, as a water-soluble binder, (A) a water-soluble polymer having a number-average molecular weight of 10,000 to 1,000,000 derived from (A1 ) a polyoxyethylene compound having a number- average molecular weight of 1,000 to 30,000 and (A2 ) a hydroxyl group-reactive compound, and as a resin latex binder, (B) a composition made up of a resin latex wherein the emulsifier content in the aqueous phase is 0.01mmol/g or less and (C) a polymer that can reversibly change between the hydrophilic nature and the lipophilic nature at a certain temperature. The component (A2 ) is, for example, polyisocyanates or polyepoxies, and is reacted with the component (A1 ) to obtain the component (A). As the component (B), various resins, particularly styrene/butadiene resin latexes, are used. As the component (C), a polymer made from a vinyl carboxylic acid ester of an alkylene oxide adduct to a cyclic amine is preferably used because its temperature sensitivity is sharp.
