PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect and correct defective picture elements in the case of adjustment attended with operation of interrupting a light beam made incident onto a solid-state image pickup element not just after application of power. SOLUTION: An aperture control means 8 closes an aperture 1 by an instruction of a black balance start means 7 in the operation of black balance as an example at adjustment. A signal outputted from a prism section 2 is given to a black balance circuit 3, a black balance control means 9 controls the black balance circuit 3 to conduct the black balance operation. Furthermore, the black balance starting means 7 is started to allow a defect detection control means 10 to control a defect detection circuit 4 to detect a defective picture element and a defect correction control means 11 controls a defect correction circuit 5 based on the detection result to correct the defective picture thereby obtaining an output signal.
