Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a bis(hydroxybenzyl)biphenyl useful as a hardener for an epoxy resin or a raw material for a phenolic resin, an epoxidized novolac resin, etc. SOLUTION: This 4,4'-bis(hydroxybenzyl)biphenyl expressed by formula I is obtained by treating 4,4'-bis(alkoxymethyl)biphenyl expressed by formula II (R and R are each a 1-6C alkyl) with phenol for dealcoholization reaction in the presence of an acidic catalyst preferably for 18hr. The use of a compound of formula I or a mixture of its isomers as a hardener for an epoxy resin such as a bisphenol-type epoxy resin or a phenolic novolak-type epoxy resin enables the production of a cured body of an epoxy resin capable of exhibiting excellent heat resistance, water absorption, mechanical characteristics and adhesion characteristics.
