Zusammenfassung: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize gradation display of a liquid crystal display element by making domain size smaller than pixel size and uniformizing domain distribution over a wide area. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element is manufactured by injecting a mixture of a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) composition and a monofunctional monomer between an electrode substrate 9 consisting of a substrate 1, an electrode L, an oriented film 5 and a polarizing plate 7 and an electrode substrate 10 consisting of a substrate 2, an electrode S, an oriented film 6 and a polarizing plate 8. After the mixture is heated at a temp. at which the FLC composition shows a nematic phase or an isotropic phase while irradiating the mixture with UV to polymerize the monomer, the liquid crystal display element is cooled. In such a manner, an isotropic structured body giving locally different threshold characteristics is formed to a striped structure in the mixture to form a liquid crystal layer 12. The striped structure is formed by holding polymers formed by polymerization between the smectic layers of the FLC composition during cooling process. |
