MAGNETIC RECORDING MEDIUM AND ITS PRODUCTION

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which has a back coating layer having a uniform film thickness in spite of the small thickness and a good film quality and a process for producing the magnetic recording medium with good productivity by applying a coating material for back coating at a high speed. SOLUTION: A magnetic layer is formed on one main surface of a nonmagnetic base and the back coating layer contg. magnetic powder is formed on the main surface on the opposite side. A coating material contg. the magnetic powder is used as the coating material for the back coating to form such back coating layer. A die 2 which has a pocket 9 to be supplied with such coating material and is provided with a slit 5 at its front end and a magnet section 3 which is constituted with a magnetic gap 15 by the front ends formed adjacently to each other are disposed in such a manner that the slit 5 and the magnetic gap 15 face each other. The coating material is extruded from the slit 5 in the state of allowing the nonmagnetic base 1 to travel between the magnetic section 3 and the die 2 without contact with the front end of the die 2, by which the coating material is applied on the nonmagnetic base 1.
