SOLUTION: In a device for detecting the degradation of a catalyst by comparing the integrated value of output values of an O2 sensor on the upstream in a degradation judging area to the integrated value of output values of an O2 sensor on the downstream while feedback-controlling the air fuel ratio after the engine is started, the change in activity of the catalyst is judged before the integration of output values of the respective O2 sensors is started. When the activity of the catalyst is about the same as that at the last time, the integration of output values of the respective O2 sensors is started from the previously integrated value. Further, when the activity of the catalyst is different from the activity at the last time, the previously integrated value is reset, and the integration of output values of each O2 sensor starts from the beginning. |
