Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a treatment method capable of converting asbestos into non-polluting and safe slag without pollution while reducing a treatment cost and a disposition cost for reclamation. SOLUTION: The asbestos or asbestos-contg. waste is melted at 1200 to 1700 deg.C in a melting furnace without adding additives, such as m.p. lowering agent, etc., by which the fiber form of the asbestos is destroyed and the asbestos is converted into harmless molten slag. An electric resistance melting furnace of a water cooled jacket type constructed to protect the furnace wall surface of a melting furnace body 1 by unmolten matter 9 is preferably used as the melting furnace. The upper part of the melting furnace body 1 is hermetically sealed by a melting furnace hood 2 and the inside thereof is preferably held in a reduced pressure state to prevent the splashing of the asbestos.
