Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE: To subject composition capable at exclusively proliferating Bifidobacterium and useful for foods, drinks and oral administration agents and the determination of the number of Bifidobacterium cells by using a specific naphthoquinone derivative or naphthalene derivative as an active component. CONSTITUTION: This composition contains a compound produced by adding H, Cl and/or a functional group (hydroxyl group, carboxyl group, amino group, aldehyde group, alkyl group, etc.) to 1,4-naphthoquinone or naphthalene as an active component. Among these compounds, 1,4-dihydroxy-2-naphthoic acid and 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid have especially strong activity to exhibit the proliferation promoting action on various Bifidobacterium strains at a concentration of as low as about 10μg/ml. 2-Amino-3-carboxy-1,4-naphthoquinone of the formula is a new substance exhibiting proliferation promoting action on various Bifidobacterium strains at a concentration of 0.01-0.1ng/ml and produced by the cultivation of Propionibacterium freudenreichii ATCC 6207 strain, etc.
