PURPOSE: To obtain a gamma curve for negative mode, by which printing executed at a negative mode gives the same expression as that executed at a positive mode, by providing an arithmetic processing means generating a new gamma curve for negative mode based on an original gamma curve for a gamma processing part. CONSTITUTION: At first, density is set to be obtained from a first gradation based on the regular gamma curve (S11). The density (OD) value of the first gradation is read (S12). The OD value which is previously read is subtracted from a maximum OD value against paper, and the value is set to be the OD value at the negative mode of the first gradation (S13). The operation is sequentially repeated until highest gradation like second gradation, third gradation and the like (S14 and 15). Thus, the new curve can be obtained. Namely, the new gamma curve for negative mode by which printing with the same impression as positive setting can be obtained is obtained by the arithmetic processing means from the gamma curve prepared for the positive mode.
