Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE: To obtain a phenol resin binder compsn. which has low moisture- absorbing properties, is excellent in the compatibility with tar or pitch, and exhibits a high residual carbon ratio in carbonization by using a specific phenol resin. CONSTITUTION: This compsn. contains, as the main components, an inorg. material and/or a carbonaceous material (A), an arom.-solvent-sol. phenol resin (B) having an ortho to para ratio of 2 or higher, and an arom. solvent (C), and may further contain tar and/or pitch (D). The ratio of A:B:C:D is pref. 100:(2-25):(0.5-10):(0-20). The phenol nuclei in component B may be linked to each other with methylene linkages or dimethylene ether linkages. Component B pref. has a number-average mol.wt. of 300-1,500 and is advantageously obtd. by reacting a phenol compd. with a formaldehyde-supplying substance in a molar ratio of 0.3-1.0, if necessary in the presence of a catalyst.
