EXHAUST GAS PURIFYING MATERIAL AND METHOD

PURPOSE:To effectively remove nitrogen oxide even from exhaust gas containing moisture in a low temp. region by using an exhaust gas purifying material having a specific component supported thereon and adding hydrocarbon and an oxygen-containing org. compd. to exhaust gas before bringing the exhaust gas into contact with the exhaust gas purifying material. CONSTITUTION:0.2-15wt.% of silver and/or a silver compd., 0.01-10wt.% of oxide of an element such as W, V or Mn and 1wt.% or less of an element such as Pt or Pd are supported on porous inorg. oxide such as alumina and hydrocarbon and 2 or more C oxygen-containing org. compd. are added to exhaust gas. Whereupon, nitrogen oxide is efficiently removed from combustion exhaust gas containing nitrogen oxide and oxygen of which the amt. is larger than the theoretical reaction amt. to a coexisting non-combustion component and residual or unreacted carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon can be also oxidized and removed.
