PURPOSE: To prevent reduction in transferability caused by the nonuniformity of the pressing force of an intermediate transfer body to an image carrier by adopting such a constitution that a nonimage area comes to a place where the stress concentration of the intermediate transfer body is highest. CONSTITUTION: The largest working place of stress applied to an intermediate transfer body belt 2 is a contact part with a driving roll 21, that is, between F and G. Therefore, the intermediate transfer body belt 2 is provided with a notch, to surely stop the nonimage area 2b of the belt 2 in this position. After all copying operations are completed, the part stops the drive of the belt 2 after passing through a belt sensor 17 and the rotation of the drum 1 as well. At this time, the circumferential length of the drum 1 and the belt 2 is in an integral multiple ratio, so that the drum 1 and the belt 2 are always moved with the same positional relation. Therefore, even if the belt 2 is deformed, the reduction in the transferability can be prevented.
