NOVEL EPOXY RESIN, ITS INTERMEDIATE AND PRODUCTION, AND EPOXY RESIN COMPOSITION AND CURED ITEM PREPARED USING THE SAME

PURPOSE: To obtain a novel polyepoxy resin which gives a cured item excellent in moisture resistance, heat resistance, and mechanical characteristics by using an arom. polyhydroxyl resin as the intermediate. CONSTITUTION: A polyhydroxyl resin represented by formula I (wherein A is a benzene ring or a naphthalene ring; B is an arom. ring; R is H or CH3 ; and n is 0-15) is produced by reacting xylene, etc., having two substitutible hydrogen atoms with a curative such as a xylylene glycol alkyl ether and then with a phenol and is reacted with epichlorohydrin to give a polyepoxy resin represented by formula II (wherein A, B, and R are each the same as in formula I; G is glycidyl; and n is 0-15). The reaction is conducted similarly to the usual epoxidizing reaction. An epoxy resin compsn. contg. the polyepoxy resin of formula II or a polyhydroxyl resin of formula I and a diepoxy-containing resin is suitable for applications such as lamination, molding, casting, and adhesion.
