Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE: To accurately position a magnetic tape at a high speed in a non- contacting state by positioning the magnetic tape by writing the cumulative number of revolutions of a reel based on the detected number of revolutions of the reel and the corresponding track number in a memory and reading out a desired cumulative number of revolutions, and then, comparing the desired cumulative number of revolutions with the detected number of revolutions. CONSTITUTION: An unrecorded tape MT is wound around a take-up reel R2 from a supplying reel R1 through a running mechanism driving circuit 4 in a recording mode and the number of revolutions of the reel R2 is detected through a frequency generator F2. Then a control circuit 2 calculates the cumulative number of revolutions of the reel 2 and writes a required sampled cumulative number of revolutions and the corresponding track number in a memory circuit 5. When the cumulative number of revolutions corresponding to a target track read out from the circuit 5 and the cumulative number of revolutions of the reel R2 read out by not winding the tape MT around a rotary drum, but fast feeding the tape MT, are compared with each other until both numbers become coincident, the magnetic tape MT can be positioned accurately at a high speed in a non-contacting state.
