PURPOSE: To lighten the burden of a control means which can process the same recording operations as those performed in a free area recording mode by regarding in advance an already recorded area as an unrecorded area in management information in an overwrite recording mode. CONSTITUTION: Management information recorded on a disk 1 is held in a buffer RAM 13 through a system controller 11. When an overwrite recording mode in which information is recorded after already recorded information is erased is selected in accordance with the operation of a key 19, a controller 12 is controlled through the system controller 11 and the management information held in the RAM 13 is read out by regarding an already recorded area as an unrecorded area in the management information, and then, the overwrite recording mode is executed by performing the same processing as that performed in a free area recording mode. Therefore, the burden of the system controller 11 can be lightened.
