Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE: To obtain a short fiber capable of being subjected to an uniform relaxed thermal treatment in a short time, excellent in thermal extensibility and having a good soft touch in good productivity. CONSTITUTION: A method for producing thermally extensively polyester short fibers comprises subjecting the bundle Y of polyester highly oriented non-drawn fibers having main repeating units comprising ethylene terephthalate units having a structure integration parameter ( 0.2 ) of 15-45% to a preliminarily thermal treatment in a constant length state at a temperature not lower than the Tg of the polyester composing the fibers, continuously subjecting the preliminarily treated fiber bundle to a relaxed thermal treatment in the below-described conditions at a temperature of the Tg or lower. (1) The temperature: a temperature lower by 30-130 deg.C than the Tm of the fiber. (2) The relaxation degree: 5-30%. (3) The time: 1-10sec.
