Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE: To provide an automatic stopping and restarting device for an engine of a vehicle which can be adopted to a vehicle on which an automatic transmission is mounted without influencing on a driver. CONSTITUTION: A select position sensor 14 is arranged on a select lever which has a drive range and a neutral range of an automatic transmission 13 senses switching to the drive range or the neutral range. A first controller 21 controls the automatic transmission 13 based on sensed output of the select position sensor 14. A vehicle speed sensor 17 senses vehicle speed. A rotation sensor 18 senses rotational speed of an engine 11. A brake sensor 19 senses whether or not a brake pedal is operated. A second controller 22 temporarily stops or restarts the engine 11 based on the sensed outputs of the select position sensor 14, the vehicle speed sensor 17, the rotation sensor 18 and the brake sensor 19.
