SOLUTION: The block adaptive differential pulse code modulation system is provided with DPCM processors 18, 20 without loss that generate a coder instruction signal in response to a pixel block, DPCM compressors 22, 24 with loss that generate the coder instruction signal in response to the pixel block, a coder 28 that generates a coded bit stream receiving the coder instruction signal and compressed, and a switch 26 that selects the coder instruction signal from the processors 18, 20 without loss or the compressors 22, 24 with loss to the coder 28 in response to a compression configuration signal and the coder instruction signal from the compressors 22, 24 with loss.
