An example of the compound of the formula, β-hydroxylauryl-β-D-maltoside, is obtained by the following process: 1,2- dodecanediol is reacted with triphenylchloromethane in the presence of pyridine to form 1-triphenylmethyloxy-2-hydroxydodecane followed by acylating the hydroxyl group on the 2-site and then reaction with acetyl maltose and deprotecting the reaction product.
