Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE: To obtain the subject new compound, a specific β-hydroxyalkyl glycoside, capable of giving dermal preparations for external use having good use feeling and detergents having good foamability and foam sustainability, as a highly safe and stable nonionic surfactant. CONSTITUTION: This compound is a new β-hydroxyalkyl glycoside expressed by the formula (A is a residue formed by eliminating one hydroxyl group from a saccharide; R1 and R2 are each H or an aliphatic chain, the total carbon atoms of R1 and R2 8-32), useful as a highly safe and stable nonionic surfactant and as an ingredient for dermal preparations for external use, good in safety, stability and use feeling or as detergent compositions having excellent foamability and foam sustainability. An example of the compound of the formula, β-hydroxylauryl-β-D-maltoside, is obtained by the following process: 1,2- dodecanediol is reacted with triphenylchloromethane in the presence of pyridine to form 1-triphenylmethyloxy-2-hydroxydodecane followed by acylating the hydroxyl group on the 2-site and then reaction with acetyl maltose and deprotecting the reaction product.
