Zusammenfassung:Prepn. of 5-hydroxy-4-methyl-2(5H)-furanone (butenolide) of formula (I) involves heating an alkyl beta -formylcrotonate of formula (II) with 0.1-2 (pref. 0.6-1.2) mole HCl, in the form of 1-38 (pref. 2-20) wt.% aq. HCl, for 0.5-24 hrs. at 90-110 degrees C. R = Et or pref. Me. Reaction is carried out in presence of 0.01-1 (pref. 0.01-0.6) mol methanol per mol of (II). Esp. (II; R = Me) is heated at reflux for 0.5-4 hrs. with 0.8-1.2 mol HCl, as 2-20 wt.% aq. HCl, and 0.01-0.6 mol MeOH.
