Zusammenfassung:	Prepn. of a 1,2,3,4-tetrahydrocarbazole of formula(I) comprises: (a) hydrogenation of a phenol of formula (II) using a catalyst (C) opt. on a carrier, with at least one ether as solvent; (b) separation of the catalyst; (c) reaction of the hydrogenation prod. with a phenylhydrazine of formula (III); and (d) cyclisation of the intermediate hydrazone under acid conditions. (C) comprises a group VIIIB metal and opt. at least one alkali, alkaline earth or ammonium salt additive. R1-R4 = H, R, 3-8 C cycloalkyl, halo, OH, OR, 3-8 C cycloalkoxy, NHR, N(R)2, NH(R'), COOH, COOR or CH2Q; Q = OH, alkoxy or NH(R'); R = 1-4C alkyl; R' = 1-4C acyl; R5-R8 = H, R, halo or OR: provided that at least one of R1-R4 is not H.
