Zusammenfassung:	Continuous prodn. of 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-4,4-dimethyl-3-pentanone (I) comprises hydrogenating an alcohol soln. of 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-4,4-dimethyl-1-penten-3-one (II) with a 10- to 40-fold amt. of H2 at 30-160 degrees C and 50-400 bar in a reactor contg. a fixed bed of support-free catalyst pellets comprising:(i) one or more Fe-group metals:(ii) opt. Group VIB metal promoters; and (iii) opt. inert elements selected from Al, Si, C and Ti. The pellets have a compressive strength of 20-250 N and a surface area of 10-80 m /g.
