Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE: To maintain the function of Fe to prevent the poisoning of Ba by sulfur as well as to prevent the reduction of the surface area of a porous carrier due to a reaction with Fe in a catalyst for purification of exhaust gas with a carried alkaline earth metal and Fe. CONSTITUTION: This catalyst consists of a carrier made of a porous body, a catalytic noble metal carried on the carrier and a solid soln. or multiple oxide of an alkaline earth metal and Fe carried on the carrier. Since the alkaline earth metal and Fe are carried as the solid soln. or compound oxide, a reaction of the Fe with the porous carrier is inhibited and the reduction of the surface area of the carrier is prevented. Since almost all Fe carried reacts with SO2 in combination with the alkaline earth metal and forms easily decomposable compound sulfate, the alkaline earth metal can restore function as an NOx absorbent by the decomposition of the sulfate.
