Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE: To prevent the occurrence of an unexpected shift shock by a method wherein a target change ratio is changed according to the engaging state of selected each friction engagement element when the oil pressure of working oil is controlled so that the rotation speed of a shift-related member is adjusted to a target change ratio. CONSTITUTION: An automatic transmission T for a vehicle comprises a main shaft MS connected to the crank shaft 1 of an internal combustion engine E through a torque converter 2 having a lockup mechanism L; and a counter shaft CS connected through a plurality of gear trains. An ECU controls hydraulic clutches C1-C4R for respective shifts based various detecting signals from various sensors S1-S7. Namely, during gear shifting, the rotation speed of a member the rotation speed of which is changed is detected and the oil pressure of working oil is controlled so that the rotation speed is adjusted to a target change ratio. In this case, the target change ratio is changed according to the engagement state of the selected one of the hydraulic clutches C1-C4R for respective shifts.
