Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE: To provide a square battery in which the generation of a clearance between the longitudinal side inner surface situated between an opening end and a stepped part and an insulating gasket can be suppressed, when the battery internal pressure is raised. CONSTITUTION: This battery has a bottomed rectangular cylindrical vessel 1; a synthetic resin insulating gasket 9 arranged in the compressed state in a position enclosed by a bent part 3 and a stepped part 4 within the vessel 1 and having a rectangular hole in the bottom part with which the stepped part 4 is brought into contact; and a sealing plate 12 arranged within the insulating gasket 9 and caulked under the compression of the gasket 9. The stepped part 4 is bitten into the bottom surface periphery 9a of the insulating gasket 9 by a length corresponding to 10%-60% of the thickness of the insulating gasket bottom part.
