PURPOSE: To highly accurately detect a shift in position of a head due to vibrations and impacts in a recording/reproducing device having a head comprising reproducing and recording heads for performing recording and reproducing for a recording medium. CONSTITUTION: A magnetic head 60 is constructed of a recording inductive head 67 formed of an upper magnetic pole 71 and an upper magnetic shield layer 65a, a reproducing MR head element formed of a MR element 63 and a detective MR head element 74 for detecting off-track. In this case, the detective MR head element 74 is formed roughly on the same line as the inductive head 67 in a track arraying direction so as to be placed on an adjacent dead zone 73b when the inductive head 67 becomes off-track.
