Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To improve display quality by improving the numerical aperture of a light valve and making a stripe between picture elements in a displayed picture inconspicuous even in the case of using a transmission type display panel whose numerical aperture is small. CONSTITUTION:In this display device, the picture formed on a display panel 6 is written in a liquid crystal light valve 7 by light from a light source for writing 2. Since the panel 6 has the picture elements in a matrix state, a matrix- state dark part, that is, a part not contributing to the display is formed in the picture written in the light valve 7. As for this device, the position of the picture written in the light valve 7 is cyclically moved by changing the relative positional relation between the light source 2 and the panel 6 by a light source moving device 1.
