Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To obtain a new and remarkably excellent ferroelectric liquid crystal compound having a high spontaneous polarization and exhibiting a chiral smectic C phase in a wide temperature range. CONSTITUTION:An optmcally active compound of formula I [R is a 4 to 22C alkyl or alkoxy; X is, e.g. 1,4-phenylene or a group of formula II (Q is a halogen, nitrile or hydroxyl group) ; Y is a halogen, methyl or nitrile; Z is a methylhalogen or CF3; R is a 1 to 10C alkyl, an alkoxy, etc.; C is an optically actrve carbon; (m) is 0 or 1; (n) is an integer of 0 to 6], e.g. 3-chloro4-(1-oxo-2- methylbutyl)phenyl 4-(4'-octyloxyphenyl)benzoate. The compound of formula I can be synthesized by reactting an acid halide with a substituted phenol having an optically active group and represented by formula III in the presence of a basic solvent such as pyridine. In addition, a quick-response liquid crystal composition can be obtained by blending one or more kinds of the above optically active compounds.
