Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of gas blow-by causes by a gap formed locally at a sealed part sealed by sealant due to a space between a catalyst carrier and a catalyst case of monolithic elliptical shape becoming uneven at the time of being used under high temperature. CONSTITUTION:Flanges 7, 7 provided on both sides of a case half part 4 is formed in the inclined shape by alpha=2-5 deg. so that the outer end 7b side is opened in relation to the extended line of the major axis of an ellipse. The opposed flanges 7, 7 are pressurized from the upper and lower sides so as to be brought into close contact, and the outer end 7b side is welded. Thermal distortion is not thereby generated to a base part 7a even if being heated at the welding time and use time, so that the shape and contact state of the base parts 7a, 7a do not change, nor a shell part 5 moves. The spacing to a catalyst carrier 3 is not thereby changed.
